Design Studies - Week 3 at Red Engine Studios

Another week passes, and another begins.  Time for more studies!

This week, we get into more design related studies, instead of just painting/drawing practice.  I'm focusing on large shapes, silhouettes, design choices, functionality, gesture, etc.

Here's a page to get started off, studying Feng Zhu's vehicle designs:

Studies from Daniel Simon's art book, Cosmic Motors:

Studies from The Skillful Huntsman, an awesome book about design featuring Khang Le, Mike Yamada, Felix Yoon and Scott Robertson:

Studies from The Art of Mass Effect

Studies from natural designs, found in nature:

Class starting up again!  Feels really good to have that push and begin improving again.. I was way too lazy over break.

Here are some head studies I am painting in Photoshop.  I will have to complete at least a hundred of these this week.  I probably will get more loose and fast as repetition continues :).  I shall update this post with more as i finish them.

Studies of pets and animals:

Silhouette study with quick creature design:

Some hand drawn studies:

Had a great trip to The Ghetty today, where I studied a bunch of old master artists drawings paintings and sculptures.  Here are the sketches I did on-site:

Dynamic Sketching - Field Trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific!

UPDATE

Concept aquatic creature thing:

Initial Sketches:

Painting of a Manta:

Peter Han (our Viscom 1 teacher) was super awesome and decided to hold a bonus class field trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.  After being a lazy bum during this break, I was eager to meet up with class mates and get drawing again!

It's a really nice aquarium, but the price is pretty high ($22/person and $8 parking). But the displays and aquatic life were wonderful.  Drawing at this location was tough because there were tons of kids bumping into you and a lot of the displays are in a dark room.  I had a lot of fun though!  Here are a bunch of on-site sketches from the trip:
